A heathen tradition
Every April 30th – on the island of Skeppsholmen in Stockholm – the inhabitants converge by the waterfront to celebrate Valborgsmässoafton (Walpurgis night). It's both a heathen and catholic celebration dating back to the Middle Ages. Bonfires are lit to ward off evil spirits, and traditionally it goes on well into the night and the next day.
